I. Raw material of Korean Wild-ginseng, THESANSAM

1. The basic difference between wild ginseng and normal ginseng

Growth environment
1. Wild ginseng is a naturally grown wild organism (without human cultivation) that grows well in loamy, sand soils located inland of alpine region at 400m above sea level, where cold climate and good drainage exists.
2. Normal ginseng is produced in manmade, flatland fields for mass production under shading nets to block off sunlight. It is a cultivated plant by human.
Cultivation method
1. Wild ginseng : The human first spreads the seed amongst the wildlife of optimal environment growth for thewild ginseng (inclined soil with good drainage and in shady area with little sun), to be let to freely grow for 7 years until cultivation point. Without human intervention, it grows freely with the surrounding wood and grass in the wild alpine region, only with the nutrients of the soil.
2. Normal Ginseng : Ginsengs go through grown in cultivated flatlands where sunlight is artificially blocked and where drainage is made to decrease moisture. This is to maximize the yield of ginseng, which is otherwise grown in wildlife, artificially on the ground for mass production purpose. During cultivation, agricultural pesticides (germicide, insecticide, herbicide) are regularly sprayed in mass amount (twice monthly; total of 100 times over 5 years for 6-year ginsengs), exclusively blocking off other organisms (weeds, etc.) other than the ginseng. This is a farming method that provides mass nutrients (fertilizer and manure) for the ginseng to grow as a root product for market production, in a short period.

2. The definition of wild ginseng names (wild-simulated and wood-grown ginseng)

Wild ginseng : general title for wild ginseng that naturally grow in the mountains
1. Transplanted wild ginseng: Title made from the cultivation standpoint that the human first spreads the seed (gained from original wild ginseng) amongst the wildlife of optimal environment growth for the wild ginseng, to be left to freely grow in the natural environment of the alpine region.
2. Wild-simulated ginseng: Title made from the morphological standpoint that the ginseng root’s rhizome site is elongated. This happens when the ginseng pushes itself out of the fallen leaves in fall, during the period when buds appear in springtime while growing in wildlife—an adaptive phenomenon.
Normal Ginseng : general title for cultivated ginseng artificially grown in the fields
1. Refers to productions that use ginseng as raw base (taekuksam, straight ginseng, red ginseng, black ginseng)

3. Standards for residual pesticide and heavy metal in wild ginseng (for THESANSAM and normal ginseng (for red ginseng)

  • Wild ginseng : Pesticide-free growth. From the semination point to cultivation point after 7 years, the wild ginseng grows freely, absolutely free of agricultural pesticides (germicide, insecticide, herbicide). While heavy metal containment varies between soils of wildlife, semination does not take place until clean zone is selected after prior soil examination of the prospective position (mountain).
  • Normal Ginseng : Cultivated with sprayed pesticides (total of more than 100 kinds in germicide, insecticide, herbicide), so that the ginseng will qualify within the standard range of residual pesticide level and heavy metal level allowed by the K-FDA (Ministry of Food and Drug Safety).

4. Main growing area for wild ginseng (for THESANSAM)

  • The raw base wild ginseng for THESANSAM products are cultivated from the alpine, wildlife region of the Baekdudaegan mountain range in Korea (areas of Pyeongchang, Jeongsan, Hoengseong, Pocheon), which are locations considered most optimal for wild ginseng growth (climate, environment).

5. Volume of raw wild ginseng secured at THESANSAM

  • 7-year old : Appt. 50 million roots spread out in the wildlife alpine region of 2 million pyeong (1 pyeong = 3.3m2), 600m above sea level. Areas of Pyeongchang, Jeongsan, Hoengseong, Pocheon.
  • 5-year old : Appt. 30 million roots spread out in the wildlife alpine region of 2 million pyeong (1 pyeong = 3.3m2), 600m above sea level. Areas of Pyeongchang, Jeongsan, Hoengseong, Pocheon.

6. Method of production traceability management for THESANSAM under the Government of Korea

  • Agricultural association corporations that pass and receive certifications after the following examinations by the Korean Forestry Promotion Institute (KOFPI) under the Korea Forestry Service may distribute and produce fresh wild ginseng (raw base for THESANSAM): soil examination of production field, seed examination, examination for residual pesticide and heavy metal on sample randomly selected from the wild ginseng in wildlife growth.

7. Criteria for quality assurance (residual pesticide) of the THESANSAM

  • Process 1 : The farm, as the first actor, directly requests for evaluation to the evaluating institution for the certificate of residual pesticide evaluation. This is prior to THESANSAM receiving the raw base wild ginseng for processing from the agricultural association corporation (certified from residual pesticide and heavy metal examination) that is recognized by the KOFPI under the Korea Forest Service.
  • Process 2 : Before dry processing, a sample is selected from the raw base wild ginseng received from the farm to receive a certificate of residual pesticide examination from a Government-designated evaluation institution. These, two evaluation processes are passed to check for residual pesticide, prior to starting dry processing.

II. Processing at THESANSAM

1. Difference between raw wild ginseng and processed wild ginseng

  • Type of ginsenoside and amount included in processed wild ginseng product: When changes to ginsenoside content was checked for prior to and after the drying processing of fresh wild ginseng, after the processing the types and amount of ginsenoside drastically increased in comparison to the content of the fresh wild ginseng (raw base for THESANSAM). This indicated that the ginsenoside’s molecular structure changes from the external heat applied in the drying process, into an activated ginsenoside form easy for absorption in the human body.
  • Effect of the processed wild ginseng product: Ginsenoside, when dosed, is dispersed bacterially in the intestine and transformed into activated form for absorption. Such intestinal bacteria are found among 65% of the general population. In the case of THESANSAM, because most of the ginsenoside is activated in the drying process, even those without intestinal bacteria can experience the benefits through natural intestinal absorption.

2. Manufacturing process for THESANSAM-processed wild ginseng products (powder and tablet) using raw wild ginseng

  • Phasel 1 (Drying) : The root part of fresh wild ginseng (THESANSAM’s raw base) is washed, and then dried through a four-step hybrid drying method. The drying method uses the H-LDM (ginsenoside maximization drying method) developed as the THESANSAM’s unparalleled drying technique.
  • Phase 2 (Powder forming) : Following microorganism evaluation on the dried ginseng (THESANSAM dried wild ginseng), selected ones are pulverized into powder form (100mesh pulverizer)
  • Phase 3 (Tablet forming) : The pulverized powder is formed into solidified tablets. Final microorganism evaluation follows before finally qualifying for release.
  • 3. Manufacturer for THESANSAM products

    • Powder product : THESANSAM’s wild ginseng powder applies cutting-edge drying technique (H-LDM) that maximizes ginsenoside contained in the fresh wild ginseng. THESANSAM’s headquarters, Pontos Global, Co., Ltd’s independent drying technique (H-LDM) is used to make THESANSAM’s powder products.
    • Tablet : THESANSAM’s wild ginseng in powder form is processed into tablet through the H-DLM technique of Pontos Global, Co., Ltd, at manufacturing companies officially recognized by the Government of Korea based on GMP (good manufacturing process).

    4. What is shelf life for THESANSAM products?

    • Dried THESANSAM product : 10 years (certified by National Agricultural Products Quality Management Service-NAQS)
    • Power or tablet : 3 years from production

    III. THESANSAM products

    1. Amount of tablets produced from single root

    • 5 year old : Approximately 600mg of dried wild ginseng is achieved by drying 1 root (3-4g) of 5-year old fresh wild ginseng. 1.5 units processed as San-premier Blue tablet (400mg/tablet)
    • 7 year old : 1,200mg of dried wild ginseng is achieved by drying 1 root (5-8g) of 7-year old fresh wild ginseng. 3 units processed as San-premier Gold tablet (400mg/tablet).

    2. What is the moisture yield in THESANSAM’s dried wild ginseng?

    • A 7-year fresh wild ginseng (average weight 6g) contains about 80% of moisture. But through the H-DLM cutting-edge drying method, this is reduced to around 15%.

    3. Differentiation of THESANSAM products via H-LDM method

    • The cutting-edge drying technique of THESANSAM innovatively maximizes ginsenoside content that is the active component of the original raw wild ginseng, even after the drying process. A hybrid method that selects the best components of the original drying methods (solar, hot-air, low-temperature) is used to drastically reduce the drying time.
    • The cutting-edge drying technique of THESANSAM is an multi-functional, innovative method that reduces drying to the minimum, while maximizing ginsenoside content and minimizing the residual microorganism in the dried wild ginseng.

    4. Where are THESANSAM products sold in Korea and abroad?

    • Domestic : Recognized department stores (Lotte, AK), THESANSAM luxury hall, 400 major pharmacies in Korea nationwide
    • International : DIA DFS (Japan), STAR Korea (Vietnam)

    5. Status of THESANSAM products in the market

    • Since brand introduction in October 2010 as “San-Premier”, THESANSAM is being sold in the recognized department stores and duty free stores in Korea and abroad.

    6. Are there any problems to the THESANSAM production supply amount?

    • Pontos Global, Co., Ltd., through cultivation contracts with wild ginseng unions across Korea, maintains stable supply systems of wild ginseng. Currently in 2013, around 400 Million roots are secured in the Gangwon Province area, thus presenting no conflicts to the raw base needed for THESANSAM’s production.

    7. Current global market condition Korea wild ginseng (used as product base material)

    • Currently in 2013, “THESANSAM” is the only international product that presents wild ginseng in tablet form, using 100% of Korea wild ginseng.

    8. Factors of superiority of the THESANSAM products in comparison to red ginseng products

    1. THESANSAM : Uses wild ginseng as base material, grown naturally in the wild alpine region, as pesticide-free.
    2. Red ginseng : Uses ginseng cultivated artificially in the flatlands with fertilizer and manure.
THESANSAM contains 36 types of ginsenoside as active form, and when compared to red ginseng extract, the content is multiplied dramatically.
    1. The 100% wild ginseng powder (PG365) of the THESANSAM’s standard wild ginseng substance has a high content of ginsenoside of the Rb and Re family, and thus is highly beneficial for blood-related, metabolic diseases (high blood pressure, hyperlipemia, diabetes)—clinically proven (See the clinical trial of July-Sept. 2012 on 65 hospitalized patients of a Government-recognized cardiovascular-specializing rehabilitation hospital;
    2. Valid feedback received on the benefits for peripheral vascular disease (cold hands and feet, constipation, intestinal) and prostatism/erectile dysfunction.
    3. The ginsenoside of wild ginseng is found to be beneficial in the prevention of chronic diseases caused by decreased immunity (various cancer prevention, suppressing cancer cells), as well as for anti-fatigue and strengthened memory (dementia prevention), etc. (based on the clinical data of research of both domestic and international academia).

    9. Credibility of market price of THESANSAM products

Single root of fresh wild ginseng is sold generally at 30,000-40,000 won ($30-40 US) in the Korean market. Using such wild ginseng as raw material at 100%, THESANSAM tablet products’ prices are as follows:
    1. THESANSAM San-Premier 48 tablets (24g) from 30 roots of 7-year wild ginseng: 1,040,000 won
-> Price of raw wild ginseng: 30roots x 40,000 won (average per root) = 1,200,000 won
    2. THESANSAM San-Premier Gold 30 tablets (12g) from 10 roots of 7-year wild ginseng: 360,000 won
-> Price of raw wild ginseng: 10roots x 40,000 won (average per root) = 400,000 won

    10. Roadmap for THESANSAM products after market entry.

    • THESANSAM currently sells 12 types of wild ginseng products (powder and tablet) with 100% wild ginseng ingredient.
    • Plans are underway to present THESANSAM products that blend the standard substance of THESANSAM (100% wild ginseng powder, PG365) with other global standard functional substance, to target specific markets by age or body type.
